Meaningful, Differentiated, and So Much Fun!
November is one of my favorite months to bring creativity and gratitude into the classroom. Between the excitement of Thanksgiving and the cozy fall vibes, it’s the perfect time to slow down and let students reflect on what they’re thankful for — while still sneaking in tons of writing practice!
That’s exactly why I created my Thanksgiving Writing Pack for K–2 — a set of fun, hands-on writing activities that work for all learners, from emergent writers to those ready to stretch their sentences and ideas.

🍂 Why I Love This Writing Pack
Every class has a wide range of writing abilities, and this pack makes it easy to differentiate without doubling your prep. With multiple versions, graphic organizers, and word banks, students can all work on the same theme at their own level.

Whether you’re doing a whole-group lesson, small-group practice, or setting up a writing center, these Thanksgiving activities fit right in!
✏️ What’s Included
Here’s a peek at what’s inside:
- What’s on My Plate? (2 versions) – Students use descriptive writing to share what’s on their Thanksgiving plate and draw their meal.
- Missing Turkey Poster – A silly creative writing activity where students design a poster for a runaway turkey.
- How to Have the Best Thanksgiving Day – Step-by-step procedural writing with three graphic organizer options.
- Opinion Prompts – Students share their thoughts on topics like “Which Thanksgiving Food Is the Best?” with sentence starters, word banks, and final draft pages.
- Thanksgiving Poems – Includes an I’m Thankful acrostic and a 5 Senses of Thanksgiving poem to build descriptive language.
- Thank-You Letters – Three differentiated versions so every student can write a meaningful note to someone special.
- Class Cookbook Project – Combine family recipes or silly student “recipes” into a class cookbook keepsake.
- Thanksgiving Word Bank – Vocabulary support for emergent and developing writers.
🧡 Ways to Use These in the Classroom
- Morning work or early-finisher bins
- Writing centers during the week of Thanksgiving
- Whole-group lessons focusing on gratitude, opinion writing, or sequencing
- Family projects — send the cookbook page home for families to complete
- Bulletin board displays — try “Our Missing Turkeys!” or “What’s on Our Plates?”
These activities not only reinforce key writing skills but also spark meaningful conversations about family, food, and thankfulness.
🥧 Keep It Simple, Seasonal, and Fun
One of the best things about this pack is that it’s truly print-and-go. You can differentiate easily, tie in social-emotional learning, and still keep students engaged during the busiest time of the year.
If you’re looking for an easy way to fill your week before break with purposeful, low-prep activities, this pack will do just that!
