Christmas Suncatchers Craft

One of my favorite holiday projects—at home and in the classroom—is making Christmas suncatchers. There’s something so calming about watching kids layer little pieces of tissue paper and then seeing their faces light up when they hold their design up to the window. It’s simple, hands-on, and gives kids a creative outlet during a season that can feel pretty busy and overstimulating.

Suncatchers are also one of those crafts that serve so many purposes. They make the sweetest classroom décor, especially when the afternoon sun hits them just right. They’re also perfect gifts for kids to bring home—easy to slip into a folder, but meaningful enough that families truly treasure them. And if you’re looking for a way to spread kindness this season, these are wonderful to deliver to a local nursing home. A bright, colorful suncatcher in a resident’s window can bring a little extra joy to someone’s day.

You can keep the process open-ended or offer simple templates such as these FREE TEMPLATES for kids who need more structure. Either way, the results always feel magical. Add in a quick planning sheet or a “how-to” writing activity, and suddenly you’ve turned a seasonal craft into a thoughtful literacy moment too.

If you’re looking for more ready-to-go templates, planning pages, and kid-friendly writing organizers, I put together a Christmas Suncatcher Pack that includes everything in one place. It’s an easy way to prep once and use all season long.
