That last week before winter vacation always feels a little different in the classroom. The excitement is high, routines are almost gone, and attention spans are… short. I still want my students practicing important phonics skills, but I’m also looking for activities that feel fun, festive, and low-stress — for them and for me.
That’s where Christmas-themed phonics centers really shine.
Keeping Phonics Fun (Even in December)
During the week before break, I like to stick with familiar routines but swap in activities that feel special. Seasonal centers are perfect for this because students already know what to do — they’re just more excited to do it.
Christmas phonics centers give students a chance to:

-Practice skills they’ve already learned
-Work independently or with a partner
-Stay engaged without overstimulation
-Feel successful right before heading into vacation
Because the format stays consistent, students can focus on the learning — not the directions.
Skills Without the Stress
Even during a busy holiday week, students can still meaningfully practice phonics skills like:
-Beginning sounds
-CVC words
-Blends and digraphs
-Matching words to pictures
-Stretching out and reading simple words

Using themed materials helps these skills feel more like a game than a lesson. I especially love centers that involve sorting, matching, or hands-on pieces, since those tend to hold attention better during an exciting week.
Sending Centers Home for Winter Break
One of my favorite things about printable centers is how flexible they are. Many of these activities can easily be:
- Slipped into a take-home packet
- Sent home in a folder for optional practice
- Used by families who want something quick and meaningful over break
Because the activities are familiar and skill-based, families don’t need to explain much — students can jump right in. It’s a simple way to encourage practice without assigning “homework.”
A Calm, Festive Way to End the Year
The goal for that last week isn’t perfection — it’s keeping learning light, joyful, and manageable. Christmas phonics centers help maintain structure while still honoring the excitement of the season. Students feel proud of what they know, teachers keep routines intact, and everyone heads into break on a positive note.
If you’re looking for a ready-to-use set of Christmas phonics centers to use in the classroom or send home over winter break, I put together a collection of festive, skill-focused activities that work well for first grade (and beyond). You can find them in my Teachers Pay Teachers store if you’d like to take a look.
